If the tube is not filled sufficiently, has been left open for too long, or if the blood was collected too slowly, this can affect the quality of the sample and therefore the reliability of the result.

Blood collection card

When using a blood collection card, the blood must be applied correctly to the indicated area and fully absorbed into the paper. If the blood does not penetrate deeply enough into the paper, is applied unevenly, or has not dried sufficiently, this can make analysis more difficult and may invalidate the test.

Stool

A stool sample must be fresh, clean, and properly packaged. If the sample is too old, has come into contact with urine or water, or is not properly sealed, the results may be unreliable. An incorrect amount of sample or contamination can also lead to an inaccurate analysis.

Colorectal cancer screening

For this test, it is essential that the stool is collected correctly according to the instructions. An incorrectly collected or contaminated sample can result in an unreliable result or important abnormalities being missed. Timing and storage also play an important role.

Urine

Urine should preferably be a first-morning urine sample and should be collected in a clean container. Contamination from substances such as soap, toilet paper, or insufficient cleaning of the area around the urethra can affect the result. Storing urine for too long can also lead to the breakdown of substances being tested.

Anal swab

It is important that the swab has sufficient contact with the correct area (the mucous membrane just inside the anus). A superficial sample, insufficient rotation of the swab, or contact with other body areas can make the sample unsuitable. Incorrect packaging or storage can also affect sample quality.

Vaginal swab

A vaginal swab must be inserted correctly and collect sufficient material from the vaginal mucous membrane. Incorrect technique, such as inserting the swab for too short a time or not deep enough, can result in insufficient material being collected. This may lead to an incomplete or inaccurate analysis.

Oral swab

For an oral swab, it is important that the swab collects sufficient saliva and mucosal cells, preferably without recent eating, drinking, or brushing teeth. If the mouth is not clean or insufficient material is collected, the sample may not be suitable for proper analysis.

• PEP is emergency medication that must be taken within 72 hours after a potential exposure to help prevent HIV infection.

Be careful with injection equipment

If you use drugs or other substances by injection:

• Always use clean, new needles
• Never share syringes or other injection equipment with others.

It is usually not possible to determine exactly when and from whom you contracted HPV. Unlike some other STIs, HPV can remain present in the body for years without causing symptoms. The virus can therefore remain “dormant” for a long time before it is detected.

There is no standard test to detect HPV in men, and low-risk types are often not tested for. In women, it can also take a long time before the virus is detected by a test or causes symptoms.

An STI does not always cause symptoms. This means you can have one without knowing it. If you have been warned by a partner, or if you think you may have been at risk, get tested even if you do not have any symptoms.

Every STI has a so-called window period: the time between the moment of infection and the moment when the STI can be detected by a test. If you test too early, the result may be falsely negative. That is why it is important to test only after this window period.

It is important to inform your recent sexual partners. This helps prevent them from developing symptoms or complications, passing the infection on to others, or you becoming reinfected if you have sex with them again.

In most cases, it is advisable to inform everyone you have had sex with in the past 6 months. In some situations, it is also a good idea to notify earlier partners, for example if you have not been tested regularly and are unsure who you contracted the STI from. Discuss with your GP or the GGD who you should contact.

How do you tell your sexual partner(s)?

It can be difficult, but there are several ways to make it easier:

• Personally, by phone or email.
• Anonymously, through websites such as partnerwaarschuwing.nl. This allows you to let someone know that they should get tested without mentioning your name.
• With help from a doctor or nurse, for example from your GP or the GGD.

Whichever method you choose, informing your partners is an important step. This allows them to get tested as well and receive treatment if necessary.

You need a blood sample for viral STIs, and urine/swabs for bacterial STIs. Only by using both types of samples can you get a complete and reliable screening.

Blood sampling is needed for HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis B, among others.

These viruses can only be reliably detected through blood testing because they spread through the blood, where antibodies or the virus itself can be detected.

Urine or swabs are needed for Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Trichomonas (more common in women) and Mycoplasma genitalium, among others.

These bacterial STIs settle in the mucous membranes of the urinary tract, vagina, anus or throat. This requires local samples: urine for men (first stream!) or swabs for women and, in case of oral or anal sex, throat and anal swabs as well.

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that often causes no symptoms, which is why it is also known as a “silent infection”. However, there are signs you can look out for:

In women:

• Pain or a burning sensation when urinating
• Increased or unusual vaginal discharge
• Bleeding between periods or after sex
• Lower abdominal pain
• Pain during sex

In men:

• Pain or a burning sensation when urinating
• White, watery, or pus-like discharge from the penis
• Pain or swelling in the scrotum

With anal or oral sex:

• Sometimes anal pain, discharge, or bleeding (with an anal infection)
• Sore throat is rare (with a throat infection), usually without symptoms

When to get tested?

• If you have symptoms
• If you have had unprotected sex with a new or multiple partners
• If your partner has chlamydia
• Routinely in risk groups (e.g. under 25 and sexually active)

Chlamydia is a common STI and can be successfully treated with antibiotics within one week. If you test positive for chlamydia, consult your GP for the appropriate treatment.

Consequences of untreated chlamydia:

• Women: increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility.
• Men: epididymitis and possible reduced fertility.
• Both: increased risk of other STIs, chronic symptoms, and transmission to others.
• During pregnancy: risk of premature birth or infection in the baby.

Chlamydia is treatable, but without treatment the consequences can be serious and permanent.

At the moment, STI tests are not reimbursed by your health insurance. If you get tested through the GGD and belong to a risk group, the test is free.

If you go to your GP for an STI test, this is usually charged to your deductible. How much you have to pay yourself depends on your health insurance policy. If you are unsure, contact your health insurer. In almost all cases, getting an STI test through your GP is more expensive than our STI test.

If you do not belong to a risk group or if the GGD is busy, you can still get tested through your GP or anonymously and discreetly through us. Please note that we currently do not have agreements with health insurers.

By practising safe sex, you reduce the risk of contracting an STI (sexually transmitted infection). Condoms and dental dams provide good protection against STIs such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis and mycoplasma genitalium. However, they do not provide 100% protection: there is always a small risk of infection, especially if the condom is not used correctly or tears.

Some STIs, such as genital warts, herpes and syphilis, can also be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact outside the area covered by a condom. Pubic lice and scabies are also spread through direct physical contact. In these cases, a condom or dental dam does not always provide sufficient protection.

HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and syphilis can be transmitted through blood or other bodily fluids, such as semen, vaginal fluids or breast milk. Infection can occur through open wounds or small breaks in the skin or mucous membranes, for example during sex or by sharing contaminated needles. Hugging, sneezing, coughing or sharing cutlery does not pose a risk.

Condom use greatly reduces the risk of transmitting these viruses. Additional protection against HIV is possible through PrEP (a pill taken before potential exposure) or PEP (after a possible exposure). A vaccine is available for hepatitis B. In the Netherlands, among others, men who have sex with men (MSM), sex workers and children born after 1 January 2011 can receive free vaccination.

If you have symptoms that may indicate an STI, or if you have had sex with someone who you know or suspect has an STI, get tested, even if you used a condom. Some STIs do not cause symptoms but can still be transmitted.

If you have multiple sexual partners or are at risk of HIV or other STIs, it is advisable to get tested at least once every six months.

If you receive a warning from a (former) partner or notice symptoms that may indicate an STI, get tested as soon as possible once the window period has passed after your last sexual contact. The window period is the period between the moment of infection and the moment when an STI can be reliably detected by a test.

It is also recommended to get tested after unprotected sex with a new partner, for your own health and the health of others.

Rapid home tests, such as those sometimes available at pharmacies, are unfortunately not always equally reliable. They can produce incorrect results, which may lead to unnecessary concerns or false reassurance. Choose certainty with a high-quality laboratory test.

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea can be detected in different ways.
Depending on where you may have an infection, you can choose:

• A swab for infections in the vagina, anus, or throat
• A urine test for infections of the penis

Yes, you can perform a vaginal test during your period. A small amount of blood does not affect the test results. However, we recommend avoiding taking the test on days when you have heavy bleeding, as this may sometimes make the result less clear.

Have you already taken the test while menstruating? No problem, your result will remain reliable.

For most home tests, you do not need to fast. This means you can eat and drink as usual before taking the test. If fasting is required for a specific test, this will be clearly stated in the instructions included with your test kit.

Sometimes it is difficult to see whether your blood has mixed properly with the anticoagulant liquid that prevents clotting. If you gently invert the tube approximately 10 times after collecting the blood, this is usually sufficient. You can then send the tube as instructed in the user manual.

Our test kits have a long shelf life and do not need to be used immediately. You can find the expiry date of your test on the sticker on the side of the packaging.

No, you should collect the blood sample on the same day. If needed, you can take a short rest between each finger prick. Send your sample back to our laboratory free of charge on the same day as the collection.

Yes, this is important. You need to fill and return all tubes included in your test kit. Only when all required samples have been collected and sent back can we provide a reliable result. It does not matter whether your kit contains two blood tubes or, for example, one blood tube and one urine tube please fill each tube as instructed in the user manual.

Our test kits include a pre-paid return label on the return envelope. Place the box inside the provided return envelope and seal it using the adhesive strip. The package fits through a standard mailbox. If you hand in the package at a post office, do not add tracking information, as this will delay the delivery.

If the outside temperature is below 4°C or above 25°C, please drop off the package at a post office.

First, please read the included instruction manual. In short, you can follow these steps:

1. Remove the cap from the yellow and/or purple collection tube. Place the tube in the tube holder. Then remove the cap from the lancet. The lancet is now ready for use.
2. Choose a puncture site, preferably the side of the tip of your middle or ring finger. Disinfect the puncture site with the alcohol wipe before pricking and allow your finger to dry.
3. Place the lancet on the disinfected area and press firmly until you hear a click. Ask someone to help you if needed. Wipe away the first drop of blood with the gauze pad.
4. Fill the yellow collection tube up to the upper line (600 µl). Stand upright and keep your hand pointing downwards. Massage your finger from the palm towards the fingertip. Allow the blood to drip into the tube or collect it using the edge of the tube. Repeat steps 5–8 if not enough blood is collected from this puncture site and use the additional lancets provided.
5. Place the cap back on the tube and press firmly until you hear a click. Then gently invert the collection tube 8–10 times.

If you also received a purple tube, follow the same steps and fill it up to the upper line (500 µl).
