Vitamin D test explained

Taking the Vitamin D test is quick and easy. Warm your hands, for example with warm water. Clean the puncture site with the supplied wipe and use the included lancet to prick your finger. Let the blood drip into the tube one drop at a time and take your time. Then close the tube securely and send it back easily and free of charge using the enclosed return envelope.

Results

Test results provide a snapshot in time and can be influenced by factors such as diet, lifestyle, medication and the time of sample collection. Abnormal values do not automatically mean that you have a medical condition.

How do you get vitamin D?

Your body can obtain vitamin D in several ways. The most important source is sunlight. Although vitamin D itself is not present in sunlight, your skin produces it when exposed to sunlight. The ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun cause your body to produce vitamin D.

You can also get vitamin D from food. Fatty fish (such as salmon, mackerel and herring), eggs, mushrooms and fortified products such as some breakfast cereals, dairy products or plant-based milk and orange juice can contribute to your intake.

For people who get little sunlight, for example during winter or due to an indoor lifestyle, it can be difficult to get enough vitamin D from food alone. In such cases, a deficiency can develop. Regular monitoring, for example through a test, can help identify deficiencies early. This allows you to adjust your sun exposure, improve your diet or take a supplement.
