Where can you get an STI test in Amsterdam?

Amsterdam offers several options for getting tested for STIs. The best-known option is the STI clinic at GGD Amsterdam, but you can also visit your GP or a private STI clinic. Alternatively, at-home STI tests are available, allowing you to collect your own sample (urine or a few drops of blood) and send it to an accredited laboratory.

The GGD primarily serves people who meet the eligibility requirements for free testing. Your GP can provide testing and personalised medical advice. Private clinics generally offer paid testing services. An at-home STI test is particularly convenient if you want to decide for yourself where and when to take the test, without having to visit a clinic.

Is an STI test at GGD Amsterdam free?

An STI test at GGD Amsterdam is free for people who meet the eligibility requirements. The GGD focuses on groups with an increased risk of contracting an STI. This means that free testing is not automatically available to everyone.

For example, young people under the age of 25 and people with certain sexual risk factors may qualify. Symptoms that could indicate an STI or sexual contact with someone who has been diagnosed with an STI may also be reasons for testing.

Whether you can actually make an appointment depends on the GGD’s current assessment. If you do not meet the requirements, you can get tested through your GP, a private STI clinic or with a reliable at-home STI test.

How does an STI test at GGD Amsterdam work?

Anonymous STI testing in Amsterdam

Not everyone feels comfortable visiting the GGD, their GP or a private clinic for an STI test. Perhaps you would rather avoid sitting in a waiting room, value your privacy or have little time during the day.

With our at-home STI tests, you don’t need to visit a physical testing location in Amsterdam. Simply order your preferred STI test online and receive a discreet test kit containing all the necessary materials and instructions.

Which STIs can you test for at home?

You can choose from our extensive range of STI tests. You can get tested for one specific STI or choose a combination test that screens for multiple STIs if you want more comprehensive testing.

Tests are available for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomonas, HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and various types of mycoplasma and ureaplasma, among others.

We also offer combined STI tests, including our 2-in-1, 3-in-1, 9-in-1 and 12-in-1 STI test. The most suitable STI test depends on factors such as the type of sexual contact, how much time has passed since the contact and which infections you want to be tested for.

It is important to consider the time between possible exposure and testing. Some STIs can only be reliably detected after a certain period.

What is the difference between STI testing at GGD Amsterdam and Labtest.nl?

Both GGD Amsterdam and Labtest.nl offer STI testing, but the way the tests are carried out differs. At the GGD, you visit a physical location where healthcare professionals are available. With us, you collect your sample yourself at home, and the analysis is performed by our accredited laboratory.

The main difference is accessibility and convenience. The GGD has eligibility requirements for free testing, and you need to make an appointment. At Labtest.nl, you can order a test kit without an appointment, regardless of whether you belong to a specific GGD target group.

At the GGD, you can receive personalised advice and treatment if necessary. We provide laboratory testing but do not offer physical examinations or personalised medical diagnoses. If you have symptoms or receive a positive test result, it is therefore important to contact a doctor.

STI test Amsterdam: how much does it cost?

The cost of an STI test in Amsterdam depends on where you get tested and which tests are required.

At the GGD, STI testing is only free if you meet the eligibility requirements. If you visit your GP, laboratory costs are generally subject to the deductible (eigen risico) of your Dutch health insurance. At private clinics, you usually pay for the test yourself.

With us, you pay a fixed price upfront for the STI test of your choice. This means you can immediately see how much the STI test costs without having to wait for a bill through your health insurance provider. You can also decide whether you want to test for a single infection or multiple STIs at the same time. In addition, our STI tests are completely anonymous.
