Ureaplasma urealyticum is a bacterium that can be found in the urinary and genital tracts of some people. It is a very small organism that cannot be seen with the naked eye. In some people, the bacterium can cause an infection, but many people do not experience any symptoms at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A Ureaplasma urealyticum infection often causes no symptoms. In some people, the bacterium may be associated with inflammation of the urethra, bladder or genital tract. Sometimes the symptoms resolve on their own, while in other cases symptoms may persist and require medical evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most people have no symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they can resemble those of a urinary tract infection or inflammation of the urethra. Typical symptoms include pain or a burning sensation when urinating, needing to urinate more frequently, discharge from the penis or vagina, or pain in the lower abdomen. Some women may also experience vaginal itching or irritation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ureaplasma urealyticum can be transmitted through sexual contact, including vaginal, oral or anal sex without a condom. The bacterium can also be transmitted from mother to child during childbirth. However, Ureaplasma urealyticum is commonly found in people without symptoms and is not considered a conventional STI by all medical guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ureaplasma urealyticum is relatively common. Many people carry the bacterium without experiencing any symptoms. It is regularly detected in sexually active adults and is therefore not considered rare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Anyone can carry Ureaplasma urealyticum. It is more frequently detected in sexually active people, particularly those with multiple sexual partners. People with certain health conditions may also be more susceptible to symptoms. The presence of Ureaplasma does not necessarily mean that an infection requiring treatment is present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can reduce the risk of transmission by practising safer sex, for example by using condoms during sexual contact. Limiting the number of sexual partners can also reduce the risk of exposure to sexually transmitted infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wash your hands after sexual contact and use condoms with new or changing partners. Maintain good personal hygiene, but avoid excessive washing, as this can irritate the skin and mucous membranes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you have tested positive, discuss the result with your doctor, particularly if you have persistent symptoms. A positive test does not automatically mean that treatment is necessary. Other causes of symptoms, including established STIs, should be considered before deciding whether treatment is appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ureaplasma urealyticum can be susceptible to certain antibiotics, but treatment is not routinely recommended simply because the bacterium is detected<\/strong>. European STI guidance notes that asymptomatic carriage is common and that routine testing and treatment are generally not recommended.
