Cholesterol is a fatty substance that is important for many bodily functions, but it cannot dissolve in blood on its own. Lipoproteins bind to cholesterol, allowing it to travel through the bloodstream to different parts of the body. LDL is one type of lipoprotein.

What role do lipoproteins (such as LDL) play in the body?

Lipoproteins ensure that cholesterol and other fats reach the right places in the body. LDL (low-density lipoprotein) transports cholesterol from the liver to cells. Cholesterol is needed for processes such as producing hormones and building cell membranes. However, when there is too much LDL cholesterol in the blood, it can accumulate in the artery walls. This can contribute to narrowing of the arteries and eventually increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

What is the difference between HDL and LDL?

HDL and LDL are both types of lipoproteins, but they have different roles. LDL is often called ‘bad cholesterol’ because it transports cholesterol to cells, and excessive amounts can contribute to cholesterol build-up in the arteries. HDL (high-density lipoprotein) is often called ‘good cholesterol’ because it helps transport excess cholesterol from the blood and tissues back to the liver, where it is processed. Higher HDL levels are generally considered favourable, while high LDL levels are associated with a higher cardiovascular risk.

Why are lipoproteins (such as LDL) measured?

Lipoproteins are measured to help assess the risk of cardiovascular disease. LDL cholesterol is particularly important: persistently high LDL levels are associated with an increased risk of conditions such as heart attack. Measuring these values can help a doctor determine whether lifestyle changes or medication may be appropriate to reduce the risk.

Which factors affect lipoproteins (such as LDL)?

Several factors can influence the levels of LDL and other lipoproteins in the blood. Genetics play an important role, but lifestyle also matters. Excess weight, lack of physical activity, smoking and certain dietary patterns can affect cholesterol levels. Some medical conditions and medications can also influence lipoprotein levels.

Can diet affect lipoproteins (such as LDL)?

Yes, diet can have a significant effect on LDL levels. Consuming large amounts of saturated fat, such as that found in fatty meat, full-fat dairy products, butter and certain snacks, can increase LDL cholesterol. Healthier choices, including vegetables, fruit, wholegrain products and unsaturated fats from foods such as nuts, fish and plant-based oils, can help maintain healthier LDL levels.

Are abnormal lipoprotein levels common?

Abnormal lipoprotein levels are relatively common, particularly among adults. Many people have elevated LDL cholesterol without experiencing any symptoms. This is why cholesterol levels may be checked regularly, particularly as you get older or if you have other cardiovascular risk factors.

How can you support healthy lipoprotein levels (such as LDL)?

You can take several steps to support healthy lipoprotein levels. Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, do not smoke and try to maintain a healthy weight. Medication may sometimes be necessary depending on your individual cardiovascular risk, but lifestyle changes can also have a positive effect. Discuss your individual situation with your doctor.

This article is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical advice from a doctor.
